Our Friday Reads are pretty sporadic these days, but Public Services Librarian Kelly Clever has a summer read to share: Run, Rose, Run by... Dolly Parton and James Patterson?!
My family visited Dollywood on our summer vacation, and while I've always considered myself a Dolly Parton fan, even I didn't realize that she had written a suspense novel with James Patterson! The public library had the novel and the companion music CD, so I checked out both.
The novel follows the path of AnnieLee Keyes, a young woman who hitches her way to Nashville with nothing but a sleeping bag, a Colt revolver, and dreams of making it big as a country music star. She's definitely running from something or someone, but her past is mysterious. Another major player in the book is a "retired" country superstar, who shares more than a few characteristics with the great Dolly Parton, herself.
Dolly's deep knowledge of the music industry and the dark undercurrents running beneath the spotlights is evident throughout the novel, and the album is a great pairing with the book. The tracks appear in the story as songs written by AnnieLee and those she meets, and it's a treat to get to hear them performed rather than having to just imagine them from type on a page.
