Friday Reads: Still a Pygmy

We're bringing our regular social media feature, Friday Reads, over to the blog! And we're also letting the librarians share a little bit about the books or why they picked up the selections they're reading.

To kick off our new year, here is Judith Koveleskie's recent read, Still a Pygmy: The Unique Memoir of One Man's Fight to Save His Identity from Extinction by Isaac Bacirongo:

Judith Koveleskie reading Still a Pygmy

"Isaac Bacirongo grew up in the Congo, where Pygmies are considered inferior and treated as little more than slaves.  He managed to get some education and helped establish the first  rights organization for Pygmies.  He was also a successful businessman, husband, and father of ten children. Because of his activism, he and his family eventually were forced to flee the country and received a humanitarian visa to Australia, where they now live.   This is a fascinating story of one family and their struggle to survive, as well as offering insight into the plight of indigenous people."
